In
the voice of my younger sister when she's asked to wash dishes, "This is dumb. Why do we have to write goals and evaluate our plan?"
I'd
be happy to tell you why.
All good businesses – big, small, old, new, successful, blue chip or pink – implement changes to increase the effectiveness of their operations and to stay relevant and competitive in the marketplace.
Changes allow for increased effectiveness and relevance.
What happens if businesses don't assess their plans and
implement necessary changes?
One
example of a business model that didn't effectively implement necessary changes
to remain competitive is one you might recall – Blockbuster.
Do
you remember the company Blockbuster? Do you use Netflix?
If
you don't know what happened to Blockbuster, visit your local Blockbuster store
today and you'll understand.
Let's look at our goals & see if there's any room
for improvement.
As
you fondly recall*, last week we
discussed setting goals using the S.M.A.R.T. method:

I'll
use one of my examples from TOPIC 1**, to create a scenario illustrating TOPIC
2: Updating Goals.
Pink Ponies Shop Goal 5: (Store
expansion goal) add at least two (2) new items to my online store by July 15th.
Data:
Creating items =
2-3 hours
Posting items on
Etsy = 2-3 hours
(To be realistic,
I've made some allowances for responding to Etsy convos & team threads and
so on…)
Action plan: Spend 3 hours each week to create and post
new Etsy goods (6 hours total).
I
looked at my other priorities and it turns out that the only way I can use 6
hours in the next two weeks to implement my Action Plan is to forgo sleeping
and visiting my favorite places to hangout.

Room for improvement
Since
I enjoy playing handball with Mia and building costumes out of cardboard boxes
with Gil, I decided I don't want to sacrifice all my playtime to expand my
online Etsy shop.
I
will, however, sacrifice 2 hours.
Improvement
Deciding
I only have 2 hours to expand my online shop by July 15th, I change my plan to
produce the same results in less than half the time by taking the inventory of
which I have more than 2-3 and posting
them as separate items instead of listing them as 1 item w/ 3 in stock.
Pink Ponies Shop Goal 5: (Store
expansion goal) add at least two (2) new items to my online store by July 15th.
Data:
Creating items =
2-3 hours
Posting items on
Etsy = 2-3 hours
Action plan: Spend 3 hours each week 1-2 hours to create
and post additional versions of existing listings (2 hours max).
Results: Got
to hang out with friends and expand my online shop before my original due date!
Hooray!!!
How realistic are your plans to reach the goals you've set out for yourself?
Thanks for reading this and considering the points I've laid out.
All the best,
Meg + 3P
